Essential Oil of the Month: Sweet Basil

Sweet Basil: (Ocimum basilicum)

“Basil is an herb of kings and of lovers; it hath a warmth that awakens memory, and a sweetness that stirs the soul.”

- F. Marion McNeill, The Scots Kitchen (1929)

With its crisp, invigorating sweetness and fresh green notes, Basil essential oil can awaken the mind and rouse the senses like a breath of fresh spring air. Just a whiff can feel like you opened a window in your brain. It can sharpen your creativity, soothe your spirit and bring a sense of deep sacred peace.

So much more than a delicious herb for your Italian dishes, Basil has long had a sacred, magical, and medicinal repute in times past. One of the most interesting things about Basil essential oil is how it blends ancient tradition with modern science, especially in its effects on mental clarity and emotional balance. Research backs this up, noting that natural compounds such as linalool and eugenol in Basil oil have calming and relaxing effects. Its high level of linalool, a natural chemical known for its ability to reduce feelings of tension and sadness, affects the brain's monoaminergic system, helping to balance mood and promote a sense of tranquility.

The name “Basil” has a rather regal origin, stemming from the Greek word basileus, which means "king" or "royalty" (Ocimum basilicum). It has long been considered a spiritually significant plant in some cultures, having been worshipped as a sacred plant, and used to make holy water and bless church altars in the Greek Orthodox religion and throughout Eastern Europe.

There’s a bit of mythology and history behind that:

Ancient Greece - Basil had royal connotations (from basileus, meaning “king”), and was considered sacred, reserved specially for nobles. It was used for love and protection.

Greek Orthodox tradition holds that basil was found growing around the site where the Holy Cross was discovered by Empress Helena. It was also said to be found growing around Christ's tomb after the Resurrection, thus leading to its use in holy water.

Ancient Egypt - Basil was found in tombs, including the one believed to be that of Tutankhamun. Used for in mummification and ritual purification as a way to gain favorable passage into the afterlife.

In India, Tulsi, also known as holy basil (Ocimum tenuiflorum), is still worshipped and considered one of the most sacred plants. The Tulsi basil plant is revered by Hindus and is considered to be a manifestation of Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, prosperity, and good fortune. It is often worshipped as a symbol of purity and divine energy, and a gateway between the earthly and spiritual realms.

Still today, it’s worshipped with rituals, prayers, and offerings, planted near homes, the center of the courtyards, and temples to ward off evil and attract blessings. It is seen as a symbol of spiritual purity.

In Ayurvedic and traditional medicine Holy Basil has been used for centuries to calm and relax, sharpen the mind, and even ward off negativity. Sometimes referred to as “the elixir of life,” Tulsi essential oil is revered for its cleansing, healing, and spiritual properties. It is believed to attract positive energy, foster a closer connection to the divine, and promote mental clarity.

Sweet Basil and Holy Basil differ in a few ways:

Holy Basil (Tulsi) (Ocimum tenuiflorum or Ocimum sanctum)
