Essential Oil of the Month: Clary Sage

Earthy, musky, euphoric and intoxicating, Clary sage is sometimes referred to as “The oil of female creativity” or “sacred femininity” because of its value in women’s issues, though men love it for its deep, earthy, calming scent.

Also sometimes known as the “Oil of Clarity and Vision,” Clary sage (Salvia sclarea) received its Latin name from the word clarus, meaning “clear” obtained from its historic use in clearing the eyes, leading to yet another nickname from the Middle Ages, “Clear Eye.” Its genus name, Salvia, derives from the Latin word loosely translated as to “save” or “heal.”

The association with clear vision refers not only to the physical eye, but to the Third Eye as well, enabling clear visions, clairvoyance, intuition, and creativity. It is said to support spiritual practices like vision quests and lucid dreaming, facilitating the ability to see through illusions and view the world from a clearer perspective

Not to be confused with her more pungent-smelling cousins in the sage family, Clary sage offers properties which are different than other sages and may be of particular benefit for women.

Here is a list of some of the benefits of Clary sage:

  • Euphoric and intoxicating

  • Aphrodisiac

  • Promotes dreams

  • Promote healthy skin, hair, and nails

  • Calming

  • Uplifts negative moods

Clary sage is still used in modern times to calm, hydrate, and nourish skin, as well as to strengthen hair and reduce dandruff.

Energetically, Clary sage essential oil helps deepen concentration, visions, and spirituality. When diffused during prayer, meditation, or other devotional practices, Clary sage reaches the depths of the unconscious mind and brings an enhanced state of awareness.

DIY Clary Sage Blend For Meditation and Prayer:

  • 3 drops of Clary sage

  • 2 drops Bergamot

  • 2 drop Lavender

  • 1 drops of Frankincense

Can be added to a diffuser to dispel illusion and enhance prayer and meditation.

Since Clary sage opens the third eye chakra (intuition), it can be used on the point between and just above the eyebrows (third eye chakra) to enhance clear energetic vision and deepen meditation, contemplation, or creative work. Be sure to properly dilute the oils and keep well away from eyes and nose.

To make a roll-on, combine the above essential oils in a roller bottle, fill with jojoba oil or fractionated coconut oil. Close the top, roll the bottle between your hands to warm and integrate the oils, then “anoint” the area between and just above your brows. Keep the oils well away from your eyes.

SWEET DREAMS BLEND For an aromatic journey into profound dreams, add the above blend to your bedside diffuser. Or make a pillow spray with two ounces of distilled water. Roll the bottle between your hands to warm and integrate the oils before spraying.

May Clary sage connect you with your inner sage and allow you to “see clearly” hidden mysteries on the road to becoming your most extraordinary self.
